Trigger Point Injection Therapy

Trigger point injection therapy- or wet needling- is an injection-based treatment used to relieve myofascial trigger points. Trigger points are commonly referred to as muscle knots. They occur when microtrauma from injury or exercise lead to small tears or spasm within skeletal muscle fibers. This leads to pain, discomfort and a sensation of decreased range of motion.

  • Chronic trigger points respond best to a combination of physical therapy and trigger point injections. This is because over time our body accommodates to our lifestyle which may lead to poor biomechanics and weakening of joint stabilizing muscles. Although the injection includes lidocaine, the mechanism of action of the injection is the needle itself. The process of using a needle in and around the area of tenderness releases the feedback loop of muscle spasms and pain.

  • The process of needling is a quick and effective procedure. Many patients report immediate results, but it’s not unusual to require more than one session for full relief. Each procedure session lasts less than five minutes. Multiple regions of the body can be evaluated and treated in one session.
